We live in a world where influencers and money-hungry marketers peddle miracle cures, and consumers eagerly reach for their wallets, hoping to find the key to vitality and well-being.
Of course, I'm referring to the nearly $200 billion supplement industry.
There are major problems with the supplement industry mostly driven by greed. Until now, I haven't seen a lot of support for the average consumer who is trying to navigate all this complexity in an effort to improve their health.
But I recently came across an app that's extremely helpful and one I consider a must-have for anyone who's on any kind of supplement.
First, let's examine a few of the problems I referenced.
Shiny supplement syndrome
Shiny supplement syndrome is basically shiny object syndrome, but with supplements.
You feel the urge to take a certain supplement because you heard an influencer talk about it and swear it changed their lives, or you read something about it and think, "Yes, this is the one thing that's finally going to solve all my health issues." This thinking is grounded in FOMO and not supported by much evidence, particularly from the perspective of your own body and needs.
A prime example of this is Athletic Greens, which I hear advertised at least three times a week on various podcasts.
The message is compelling: it has all these natural whole food ingredients that act as "nutritional insurance" (who doesn't want that?), probiotics for gut health, and adaptogens for mood. It feels like if you're not taking this, you're missing out on so much. But something about this message seems a little too good to be true. Because if it were that easy, wouldn't everyone just take it and have perfect health?
Of course, it's not that simple, but marketing is a powerful thing. Many people, including myself, have ended up subscribing to and taking supplements for months or even years, not really knowing if they're helping and wasting thousands of dollars in the process.
Shady supplement brands
On the producer side, there's a problem with a shady, highly unregulated industry.
The unfortunate reality is many of the people behind these supplement brands are more interested in getting rich than in improving people's health. They promote supplements filled with proprietary blends that lack clinically effective dosages of the ingredients they claim are science-backed. In the worst cases, these products contain harmful additives that can even harm your health.
If you look on Amazon, you'll see hundreds, if not thousands, of different supplement brands and products. It's hard to know which brands operate with integrity just by looking at reviews, which often come from unknowing consumers.
Enter SuppCo
SuppCo is a new health app that I've become maybe a little too obsessed with for my own good.
This is one of the best health apps I've come across, and as someone who's tried many health apps, I don't say that lightly. I consider it essential for anyone who's interested in optimizing their health, longevity, and overall well-being through supplementation.
This app is valuable because it addresses many of the issues I mentioned in a thoughtful way. At its core, it's a large database of supplements, a very comprehensive database I might add, where you can find almost every supplement available. But it goes beyond that by helping consumers make informed decisions and design a supplement stack that truly benefits them.
Here's what it can do for you:
Find trustworthy brands
The app features a trust score for each brand on a scale of one to ten, making it easy to interpret. The trust score is based on 29 different attributes, including third-party testing and ingredient quality. This score helps you judge a supplement brand's quality at a glance. If a supplement brand scores 8.5 or higher, you can be confident in the quality of the product and integrity of the company.
Explore health protocols
SuppCo helps you build a good supplement protocol based on your goals. It includes protocols for gut health, inflammation, heart health, and more. You can see what nutrients are targeted for each protocol and build your stack accordingly. For example, if your goal is to improve heart health, you can view that protocol and see the recommended amounts of omega-3s, CoQ10, and other nutrients within it.
Research and compare products
You can search for certain supplements or browse recommended ones according to your goals. This takes you to a detailed page for each specific supplement with more useful information. When researching a certain type of magnesium, for instance, you can compare prices per serving on the detailed product page and find links to purchase the product on Amazon or elsewhere. This way, if you're on a budget, it helps you price shop and find good deals.
Rate your supplement stack
Finally, you can build your supplement stack within the app and get feedback on it. You can enter all the supplements you're taking, and it rates your stack on a scale from zero to 100, providing suggestions for improvement. For instance, if you're taking a brand with a low trust score, it might recommend a higher-scoring alternative. It also identifies if you're not getting enough of a particular nutrient for your goals.
Why you should download it now
SuppCo is well-designed, user-friendly, and intuitive, even for those unfamiliar with supplements.
And the best part is it's free (which I still can't believe). I don't know how long that will last, though. I downloaded it through Ben Greenfield's link from one of his podcast show notes, as he's an affiliate for the app.
I know I'll personally be referring to this app every time I need to reorder a supplement or consider a new one.
I recommend downloading it and starting to use it right away before they potentially start charging.
P.S.
I’ve recently added this app to my ultimate health product guide which includes over 80 of my favorite products across more than a dozen categories with links to each product.
If you're interested, you can read the full thing here (updated for 2025):
There is also a great website. Consumer Lab.com that grades and ranks supplements.
Thanks for the heads up! I downloaded - what a great app to have today, when there is so much noise out there about what to take and what not to take. It’s helpful to see how my supplements align with my goals. I think it’s important to listen to our bodies - how something makes us feel and perform - but it’s also nice to have real data/info to compare. Good stuff 💯
